Asus Announces Motherboard With Onboard RAM

2GB of DDR3 1333MHz to be precise.

If you find that choosing the best memory to use with your shiny new P35 chipset fitted motherboard is an arduous task at best, then Asus may have come up with the solution for you. The latest in its P5K3 range of motherboards, the P5K3 Premium is pretty much the same as the rest of the models in the range, but with one additional feature. Doing away with RAM slots, Asus instead has decided to embed 2GB of 1333MHz DDR3 RAM (two 1GB modules) directly onto the board, adorning it with a heatsink and heatpipe arrangement in the process.

Asus hasn’t stopped there though and is also declaring that the memory will be able to overclock up to 1500MHz, although a processor with a 1066MHz FSB is recommended to achieve this. Asus is also citing up to 50 per cent random access performance improvements due to the way the RAM has been mounted on the motherboard. No word has been given on what (or who’s) memory is being used to achieve this performance.

Dubbed the “Perfect T-Tree Design” the layout used on the P5K3 Premium allows the memory controller to access both memory chips at the same time as opposed to the “fly-by” method usually used. It all sounds good in theory but considering the premium prices charged for DDR3 RAM at the moment and the lack of any ability to upgrade the RAM later, which may well put off the overclocking market that Asus seems to be targeting, some may be left wondering exactly where the target audience is. However, if the price is right Asus may well be onto a winner here as 2GB of RAM is currently considered the price versus performance sweet spot for Vista, for those of us brave enough to dare risk the upgrade.
