Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will introduce the series’ first ever transgender character
After dozens of installments since debuting in 2007, Assassin’s Creed is set to introduce its first ever transgender character in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.
The character is Ned Wynert, a transgender male, one of the many quest-giving NPCs that will be found throughout Syndicate’s rendition of London.
“Inclusiveness is something that’s super important for us as a team,” Assassin’s Creed Syndicate creative director Marc-Alexis Côté told Eurogamer.
“We’ve made a good push towards diversity and how we approach different subjects in the game.”
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is building upon the lack of representation found in AC: Unity, which received a fair amount of criticism for its lack of female characters.
Syndicate will have two playable protagonists, Jacob and Evie Frye. The brother-sister duo will work to take over the boroughs of London being ruled by the Templar Elite.

The opening statement of Assassin’s Creed, which appears as every game starts, has also been changed.
It now reads: “Inspired by historical events and characters, this work of fiction was designed, developed, and produced by a multicultural team of various beliefs, sexual orientations, and gender identities.”
The second half of the statement has been altered slightly, it used to say: “designed, developed, and produced by a multicultural team of various religious faiths and beliefs.”
Wynert’s gender is never referenced in-game, Côté hopes players to form their own opinions about him.
Syndicate isn’t the only triple-A title to feature a transgender character as of late.
Dragon Age: Inquisition recently introduced Cremisius “Krem” Aclassi, the first transgender character ever created by developer BioWare.
We’d love to see a similar character in the upcoming Mass Effect: Andromeda, which is due in Q4 2016.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will release on October 23 for PS4 and Xbox One, the PC edition will follow on November 19.
