Ubisoft has released official details for the new Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag game, a swashbuckling pirate adventure set across 50 locations in the Caribbean.
Due November 1 on current generation consoles and PC, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag will follow Edward Kenway, the grandfather of the Assassin’s Creed 3 protagonist Connor Kenway, along his nautical escapades.
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Features
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag picks up on one of the most popular aspects of its predecessor, Assassin’s Creed 3, featuring much more detailed and involved sea battles, focusing on the exploration of the open sea as a major part of the storyline. Set during the golden age of piracy in the 1700s, the game follows new pirate protagonist Edward Kenway – a character described as drunken, defiant and brash chap still retaining bags of charisma and intellect.
Edward Kenway should be similar to the series’ most popular character, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, especially in terms of personality, but also the storyline, seeing Kenway rise from carefree brigand to someone deeply involved in the Assassin cause.
As for locale, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag looks to provide the most vast and diverse world ever seen in the Assassin’s Creed games. Taking place in the West Indies, the new game will traverse through 50 different Caribbean locations and a wide array of environments from rooftops, forests, underwater shipwrecks and wild jungles. A diving mode and full naval combat will also play a part, especially as players command their very own ship, the Jackdaw. When Ed isn’t sailing, he could be found in the three main urban locations of the Jamaican capital of Kingston, Cuba’s Havanna or the pirate haven Nassau.
The next Assassin’s Creed game will attempt to stick to real-world events within the historical timeframe, but will also feature notorious seafarers such as Blackbeard, Calico Jack and Charles Vane amongst its cast list, similar to the various appearances of Leonardo da Vinci in previous games.
Ubisoft revealed that Desmond Miles, the main modern day protagonist of the series, won’t be seen in the new game. At the moment details of his replacement are still under wraps, as all we know is that the new modern day protagonist could be a researcher at Abstergo Entertainment, part of the dubious Templar front Abstergo Industries. It could be that several Abstergo employees are using the Animus to explore past existences in search of a piece of Eden for the Templars, with multiplayer gaming also involved within this idea.
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Release Date
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag will launch on the current-gen Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U consoles on November 1, with a PC/MAC edition due a little later. The game will also launch on the upcoming PlayStation 4 and possibly the next-gen Xbox 720 if and when it is unveiled.
