Archos has announced a pair of smart home devices which hope to bring Android functionality to pretty much any room in your home.

First up is the Archos 35 Home Connect which is a portable radio which will give you access to 50,000 internet radio stations via the pre-loaded TuneIn app over Wi-Fi. With an inbuilt battery the Home Connect is certainly portable and you can bring it with you inside or outside the home - as long as you have a Wi-Fi connect of course. As well as radio, the Home Connect comes with a pre-loaded alarm app will bring together weather, traffic and local news for you each morning. The Home Connect will give you access to thousands of Android apps including games which can be played via the device’s touch panel. The radio boasts two high definition speakers and Archos promise users will be “amazed by the sound quality produced.” One of the most intriguing aspects of this new device is the front-facing camera, which can be used for video calling but could also be deployed as a baby monitor or even for room surveillance when you’re away from home. The Archos 35 Home Connect will go on sale at the end of September for £119.

Next up is the Archos 35 Smart Phone which as you may have guessed is an Android-based DECT home phone. Compatible with any ADSL box or phone line and using standard DECT protocols the ARCHOS 35 Smart Home Phone brings users contact sharing with their Android smart phone, MP3 ringtones, caller photo ID as well as access to thousands of Android apps, web surfing, emails  and video calling. The phone’s charging dock is separate from its wireless receiver so there’s no need for a huge dock right next to the phone line. This is possibly the only home phone which will let you video call a PC or another Android phone and the video camera can again be used for baby-monitoring or room surveillance. This is certainly a step forward in home phone functionality but we have to wonder, with the lines blurring between mobile phones and home phones, do people really need both. If you think you do need the Archos 35 Smart Phone then it will also be available at the end of September for £129.

Both these devices will be on show at the IFA trade show in Germany at the beginning of September and we’ll be sure to swing by the Archos stand to give them the once over.
