According to reports this week, Apple is working on a replacement for its ancient Thunderbolt-equipped standalone desktop display that would pack in integrated GPU.
However, word on Thursday suggests that high-res display will not appear at WWDC on June 13 and, by the sound of it, hardware announcements will be pretty thin on the ground.
Sources have told 9to5Mac the 2016 edition will be a “software year,” indicating we’re unlikely to see much in the way of new hardware.
While that isn’t exactly a surprise, it would still be a disappointment given how relatively little buzz exists around the event this year.

It looks like we’re going to have to settle for iOS 10, the next version of Mac OS and perhaps improvements to watchOS and tvOS.
There’s also likely to be developments with HomeKit, HealthKit, Apple Pay and Apple Music during the keynote address.
As for that standalone desktop display, well that might be worth waiting for. Reports have suggested it’ll feature integrated GPU which could complement the graphical power of any Mac connected.
According to sources the Mac will be able to determine which GPU is more powerful before deciding which one to use. This could make the monitor an able partner to MacBook owners seeking to improve their gaming experiences.
