Apple Watch sales will fall despite Series 2 launch – report

The tech world waited with bated breath for the Apple Watch Series 2, only to let out a collective “is that it?” when Apple unveiled its second generation smartwatch last month

Some members of Team Trusted went into the event with sky-high expectations that, pending a full review, look like they’ll be unfulfilled by an update more modest than anticipated.

That general feeling could translate into an unexpected fall in sales across the whole range this year, according to noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via MacRumors).

He’s cut 2016 sales projections by 15-25 per cent, tipping sales of 8.5 million to 9 million, compared with an estimated 10.4m shipped last year.

Of course, few outside of Infinite Loop know how many watches Apple sold last year, because the company doesn’t declare the figure.

As a result estimates vary significantly, but Kuo points out the Apple Watch has not put a dent into Fitbit sales.

Subjectively, he puts his projection down to the lack of a killer app, poor battery life and too great a reliance on the iPhone.

Regardless, a fall in sales year on year would unlikely be what Apple had in mind with general consensus that people like to wait for the 2nd-gen of any Apple product.
