Apple TV update enables Remote app, Siri control for Apple Music

Apple TV 2015 5

Despite the hype, the new Apple TV remote isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. You can lean on the touchpad and find yourself transported through a movie, while text-input is even worst than on the last-gen device.

Apple has made an attempt to rectify the typing blues with a couple of updates within tvOS 9.1, released on Tuesday (via 9to5Mac).

The company is finally offering compatibility with the old faithful Remote app for iOS, which lets users type Apple TV search terms, usernames and passwords on the touchscreen rather than agonisingly swiping character-to-character.

The Remote app is also available for the Apple Watch, meaning owners won’t even have to pick up their phones to find their favourite content

Secondly, those seeking content on Apple Music won’t have to type at all, thanks to the addition of Siri controls. Using the bundled remote users will be able to press the microphone button to request artists, playlists, radio stations and the like.

To download the update Apple TV owners can head to Settings > Maintenance > Software Updates.

Once the update is complete, users will see the new Apple TV show up in the Remote app, providing the devices are on the same Wi-Fi Network and iTunes Home Sharing is switched on.

Elsewhere on Tuesday Apple rolled out iOS 9.2 for iPhone and iPad, while also unveiling a Smart Battery Case for iPhone.
