Apple TV gets iOS 8-style revamp and a Beats Music channel

On the day Apple has unleashed iOS 8 for iPhone and iPad, the company has also issued a software revamp for its Apple TV set-top box.

The new version of the Apple TV software, which is only available to download for the most recent, third-gen model, mirrors the thinner text and flatter icons approach within iOS 8.

As well as the visual spruce Apple has also added a Beats Music channel, following the firm’s $3 billion purchase of the company in May.

The new software introduces iTunes Family Sharing, which enables multiple Apple ID accounts to be linked to a single credit card, which means purchases will be available on more devices and can be approved by the cardholder beforehand.

Those with third-generation Apple TV boxes (the 1080p version released in 2012) will also have access to iCloud Photo Library, enabling them to view all of their photos on all of their devices, rather than just saved to the Photo Stream.

The Apple TV refinement, which leaves those with the 2011 720p box out in the cold, comes days after Apple CEO Tim Cook reiterated Apple’s “intense interest” in the television market.

Cook claimed the TV experience was stuck in the 1970s with its “awful” interfaces and lack of viewer control over content. The CEO stopped short of a vow to fix the industry, but claimed Apple TV goes some way to remedying the problem.
