Having surfaced as part of the Cupertino-based company’s continuing legal battles with bitter rival Samsung; the internal Apple document has shown that the iPad Air and iPad mini maker has been looking at areas of the smartphone market where it has fallen behind the competition.
Apple’s findings have shown that the company is to put more focus onto smartphones with screen sizes larger than 4-inches – the current size of the 5S and iPhone 5C – as well as handsets which line up under $300 (£180).
Entitled “Consumers want what we don’t have,” the internal Apple document dates back to April 2013, looking ahead to its smartphone plans for the 2014 financial year.
Showing that smartphone sales grew by 228 million units between 2011 and 2012, Apple’s research has forced the manufacturer into the realisation in that the market has grown around the iPhone and a number of new directions.
With a raft of iPhone 6 rumours having emerged in recent weeks and months, the newly surfaced internal document has added serious backing to the repeated claims that Apple’s next-generation smartphone will be significantly larger than past offerings.
On a pricing front, last year’s iPhone 5C, a plastic bodied device which lined up from £469, £80 cheaper than metal hewn iPhone 5S, has failed to generate much consumer interest. As such, an even cheaper entry point into the iOS ecosystem looks likely.
