Apple taking over Beats hardware design

As part of its $3 billion Beats acquisition, Apple will take on all future design work for the audio company’s iconic headphone and speaker lines.

That part of the deal has been confirmed by design company Ammunition, which has been the key Beats collaborator over the past eight years.

Ammunition played a huge part in the rise of the Beats brand, coming up with the familiar bold and chunky look of all of its headphones as well as the likes of the Beats Pill. You’ll have seen their design work around the necks of pretty much every young Premier League football player, no doubt.

In a blog post on the Ammunition website, founder and chief designer Robert Brunner revealed the news and approximate terms of this design changeover.

“Over the next few months, the design for Beats will transition away from Ammunition,” Brunner said. “It’s tough to step down as Chief Designer for a brand I take so much pride in, but it certainly makes it easier knowing we are handing the reigns over to one of the world’s most successful design teams.”

Brunner also reflected on the positive affect that passing the baton on to arguably the world’s biggest design-led company would have on Ammunition.

“As a studio focused on pushing the limits of what design can do to create new business opportunities, we cannot imagine a more validating outcome,” he says. “The incredible impact that the design of Beats has had on culture as a result of our collaboration since that first meeting is still unbelievable to me.”
