Apple supplying Messages bug fix in iOS 8.4

Apple will issue a full fix for a troublesome Messages bug in the iOS 8.4 update, it’s been confirmed.

Back at the end of May, a serious bug was discovered in the iOS Messages app. It could see you frozen out of the messaging app simply by receiving a specific string of characters as a text message.

Even worse, if that message is accessed through the lock screen it will crash your iPhone.

It subsequently emerged that this issue extended to third party messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Twitter, and Snapchat, as it was actually a problem with the way banner notifications handled Unicode. The Mac and Apple Watch could also be affected.

Apple responded by providing a workaround method for those who had received such a message, which involved using Siri to send yourself a message. However, there was no news on a proper fix, other than an acknowledgement of the bug’s existence and an assurance that the issue was being worked on.

Now we know that this bug will be fixed in the forthcoming iOS 8.4 update. MacRumours is reporting that the fourth and latest developer beta of iOS 8.4 has eradicated the issue.

So when will average punters be receiving this fix? iOS 8.4 is expected to launch ahead of Apple Music’s June 30 launch, so at most we have a wait of a couple of weeks on our hands.
