It looks as if Apple is getting ready to upgrade its trusty old Magic Mouse and Wireless Keyboard duo, according to recent regulatory filings.
If you’re wondering why this information warrants a news piece, it’s because despite Apple’s annual churn of new MacBooks and iMacs, it hasn’t touched its basic input peripherals for around six years.
As pointed out by 9to5Mac, that’s set to change some time soon. New Bluetooth Magic Mouse and Wireless Keyboard devices have cropped up in a pair of FCC filings.
Unfortunately, the technical drawing-like images of the new peripherals don’t reveal any special new design details, although we can see a small power switch on the top left side of the keyboard (be still our beating heart).
There’s plenty of speculation out there based on sound logic, however. For example, given that iOS 9 is set to bolster Bluetooth keyboard support for the iPad, it would make sense if Apple added some new iPad-focused keys to its next keyboard.
Similarly with the mouse (which is labelled the “Magic Mouse 2” in the filing), Apple has been busy implementing Force Touch into recent Macbook touchpads, so it would make sense if the new mouse had a similar feature.

Both devices will benefit from Bluetooth 4.2, which will make for a faster and more power-efficient wireless connection to your Mac. The filing also hints that both devices could be equipped with lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, so no more wasteful AAs.
Apple is due to hold an event on 9 September to announce the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, but there’s a chance these new peripherals will receive a quiet rollout some other time.
