Apple’s new patent could be next iPad’s killer feature

Apple wants the iPad to dominate computing, but that’s a tough ask when the device is lacking in ports.

An Apple patent has revealed a stackable Smart Connector that would let users connect multiple accessories to the iPad.

The Smart Connector, recently introduced on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (and 9.7-inch iPad Pro), currently only allows one accessory to be attached.

However, the patent describes a system whereby connectors can be stacked on top of each other to attach several devices simultaneously.

The patent reads as follows:

“A stackable connector interface with magnetic retention for electronic devices and accessories can allow power and data to be transferred between one or more stacked connectors.”

As explained, the connectors will stack magnetically, which should mean easy attaching and detaching.

Apple outlines a number of products that could benefit from the technology, including “wearable devices such as smartwatches”, as well as “iPhone devices” and “iPad devices”.

The patent is listed by the US Patent and Trademark Office with the reference ID ‘9300083’, and was awarded and published on March 29, 2016. The filing, however, was actually made on September 30, 2013.

Don’t forget that owning a patent is in no way indicative of intent to actually utilise the technology. There’s always a chance that Apple may never even debut this stackable Smart Connector.
