Apple has officially rolled out the newest version of Mac OS X, with El Capitan now available as a free upgrade for users.

The new software, which is the 11th major OS X update since it arrived in 2001, can be obtained from the Mac App Store right now.

The 6.08GB download brings one of the most-requested Mac OS X features – a split-screen view to allow apps to sit neatly side by side.

One of the least revolutionary updates in recent years, El Capitan also delivers a smarter Spotlight search as recently demonstrated within iOS 9.

There’s also a new Notes app and new Mail gestures that enable the trackpad to be used to swipe mail. Safari now offers pinned sites, plus there's a revamped version of the Photos app and Transit view has been added to Apple Maps.

System text also has a refreshed look and feel, thanks to the San Francisco font that recently graduated from watchOS to iOS.
