Apple has retained its Tablet of the Year crown at the 2014 TrustedReviews Awards with the iPad Air 2 taking top honours.

12 months on from the original iPad Air’s victory, the Cupertino-based company’s continued dominance in the tablet space has seen the much improved model be named the 2014 TrustedReviews Tablet of the Year.

The iPad Air 2 was a resounding victor in a category contested against the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and Best Value Tablet champion, the Tesco Hudl 2. Having dominated the public vote with almost 35 per cent of entrants, the iPad Air 2 was also a unanimous champion with our panel of expert judges.

It’s hard to look past the iPad Air 2 when it comes to the award for the best tablet,” TrustedReviews Editor Evan Kypreos said in handing out the award.

“Yes there have been some great tablets from the likes of Samsung, Amazon, Tesco, Google and Microsoft this year but nothing can quite match the all-round greatness of Apple’s big, but thin, slate.”

Mimicking the likes of the iPhone 6 in adopting a TouchID fingerprint sensor, the iPad Air 2 wowed us with its unfounded move to an ever slimmer, 6.1mm thick form factor while cramming in a mass of high-end components.

Getting a power boost from the new 64-bit A8X processor – a chip which offers 12 times the power of the original iPad – the second-gen Air adds a new 8-megapixel rear-mounted iSight camera with an f/2.4 wide-aperture lens.

Despite the iPad’s improved specs sheet and further refined brushed metal design, the iPad Air 2 has retained its competitive price tag.
