Apple reportedly working on 12-inch MacBook Air

Apple has a new 12-inch MacBook Air in the works ahead of a planned release this winter, latest reports have suggested.

With the Cupertino-based company currently offering the super slim MacBook Air in 11-inch and 13-inch guises, new reports have cited unnamed “sources from the upstream supply chain” in claiming the new laptop size will enter production during the third quarter of the year.

While we would find the introduction of a 12-inch MacBook Air a slightly unusual and unnecessary move from the iPhone 5S maker, the anonymous sources have claimed Apple is making the move as the 11-inch MacBook is to close in size to the 9.7-inch iPad Air.

According to the tipsters: “The iPad’s increasing sales are impacting MacBook demand and therefore the company is looking to establish a clear boundary between the two product lines.”

It has not been detailed when, or indeed if Apple plans to offer the mooted 12-inch MacBook Air alongside or instead off the existing 11-inch model, although it has been suggested culling the 11-inch device would be a “logical” move.

Although Apple has yet to offer any official word on any such plans, the latest rumours have claimed that the 12-inch MacBook Air would feature the same svelte design as the existing models, with an identical battery capacity and internal layout also expected.

It has also been widely suggested that Apple could launch a Retina display hosting MacBook Air in the near future, although it is unclear if this improved display would make an appearance on the tipped 12-inch device.
