A bold start to 2007.
You may remember back in September Apple unveiled the ‘iTV’, it’s own multimedia player for getting content off your PC and onto your televisions. Well at this year’s MacWorld it’s had a rebrand and – coupled with the official unveiling of the long awaited iPhone – Apple’s decided it could do with one too.
From now on Apple Computers simply wants to be known as ‘Apple Inc.’ which seems fair enough considering it is far more than a computer company these days and it emphasised the point with ‘Apple TV’.
Apple TV is new name for ‘iTV’ and we’ve finally got some hard facts about its release. A February release date is targeted and consumers will have to cough up a not altogether insubstantial £199 to get it.
As we already knew the device will let users wirelessly stream pictures, video and audio – including podcasts – from their Mac OS X or Windows based computers to their TVs but now we’ve a few more specs. A 40GB hard drive will be at its core which Apple claims is good for up to 50 hours of video while the wise decision to include WiFi with Draft N capabilities (backwards compatible with 802.11g) is a smart move for smooth movie playback.
The Apple TV interface syncs directly with iTunes too so whenever you add content to your desktop/laptop this is automatically made available.
While Apple won’t be breaking as many new barriers with this device as with the, admittedly stunning, iPhone it’s clear Steve Jobs has a wide vision for the digital lifestyle that goes far beyond his original plan for the company.
After a dull 18 months 2007 shows Apple is back!
