We’re used to Apple shouting from the roof tops about its new products, so it was quite strange to see it has very quietly refreshed its MacBook Pro line-up as well as its iPad 2 Smart Covers.
While the MacBook Pro refresh isn’t anything radical, for those considering purchasing one, it will certainly be of interest. Apple has tweaked the speed, video and storage capabilities across the 13in, 15in and 17in laptops without increasing the prices.
Looking at the largest form factor, the 17in model (costing £2,099) is now offered with a Core i7 processor running at 2.4GHz (up from 2.2GHz) and the discrete graphics card has been bumped up from the AMD Radeon HD 6750M to a Radeon HD 6770M with 1GB.
With the 15in model (£1,549), the Core i7 processor has also been tweaked, now offering speeds of 2.2GHz compared to 2GHz previously. Again the graphics get a boost with the Radeon HD 6490M with 256MB being replaced with the Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB. This is a fairly major upgrade for the 15in model and one which those who purchased a 15in MacBook Pro last week will not be happy about.
The 15in model is also available with a 2.4GHz i7 processor, 750GB of storage, and AMD’s Radeon 6770M with 1GB for £1,849.
The 13in model (£999) has also had a speed boost with the Core i5 processor now running at 2.4GHz rather than 2.3GHz. However an option for discrete graphics has not been added, which will be a disappointment to many. However Apple has included a storage boost up from 320GB to 500GB.
The 13in model is also available with a 750GB hard drive and a 2.8GHz Core i7 processor for £1,299.
Turing our attention to Smart Covers, Apple has been equally quiet regarding the refresh, but this time possibly because the refresh is not all that interesting.
The main point of the refresh it seems is to get rid of the lurid bright orange option and make the inner microfibre lining the same as the outer colour.
Apple has not made any changes to the pricing, meaning the leather option will still cost you £59 and the polyurethane option set you back £35.
