Apple orders record number of iPhone 6 handsets for launch

Apple is gearing up for its biggest iPhone launch yet, with reports suggesting that it has ordered the construction of between 70 million and 80 million iPhone 6 units.

It’s widely expected that Apple will launch two new iPhone 6 handsets over the coming months, both of which will feature a larger display than normal.

One will feature 4.7-inch display, while the other will come with a phablet-like 5.5-inch screen.

The Wall Street Journal reckons that Apple is betting on customers’ current taste for large-screen smartphones to make this duo the most popular iPhone generation ever.

As such, it is preparing for the largest initial run of iPhones ever by asking for between 70 million and 80 million handsets by the end of the year. That figure will cover both of the aforementioned iPhone 6 versions.

To place that figure into context, the initial run of last year’s models, the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, amounted to between 50 million and 60 million units.

Of course, there were severe shortages of the iPhone 5S immediately following its release, so it’s arguable that a significantly increased launch number was necessary for its successor regardless of the increased appeal of a larger display.

Then there’s the fact that Apple will likely include China as a launch country for an iPhone for the very first time, which will bump up the number of initial orders significantly.

In order to meet these record order numbers, the report claims that Apple’s two key iPhone assemblers, Pegatron and Foxconn, are on a “hiring binge.” Foxconn in particular is said to be “hiring workers by the hundreds a day to staff production lines.”

It’s believed that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will launch in September,  while the 5.5-inch model may follow a little later in the year.
