Apple me.com email addresses will become iCloud.com with iOS 6

The third beta release for Apple’s iOS 6 was released to developers this week. One of its main updates is that users can now get an iCloud.com email address.

The change is part of the transition to iCloud from the short-lived MobileMe service, which started in 2008 and ended on June 30 this year.

Release notes for iOS 6 beta 3 contain the following details:

“iCloud.com email addresses are now available for iCloud mail users. Users signing up for new Apple IDs, or enabling Mail on their iCloud account for the first time, will automatically receive an @icloud.com email address instead of a me.com email address. iCloud users with @me.com addresses that have been used with iOS 6 beta 3 will receive an @icloud.com email address that matches their @me.com address.”

Of course only app developers have official access to the beta versions, but it’s an indication of how Apple will be managing these upgrades when iOS 6 launches later in the year.

It means if you have already enabled Mail on an iCloud account, you will need to wait for iOS 6 to arrive if you want to use that address.
