Apple Music now half price for students

Apple has knocked 50 percent off the price of Apple Music subscriptions for students.

The new student tier offers Apple’s subscription music service at just £4.99 per month rather than the usual £9.99 per month. Apple’s new plan applies to eligible universities in the UK, as well as the US, Australia, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, and New Zealand.

As TechCrunch reports, it’s possible to get the new student rate for up to four years, and they don’t have to be consecutive. Existing subscribers can also switch to the new tier.

All of which is good news for iPhone-using students, but it also appears to confirm that Apple is seeking to kickstart its music service after a disappointing start.

It’s fair to say that Apple Music hasn’t been as big a hit as many people – including Apple itself – were hoping for. It received a lukewarm critical response thanks to its sprawling nature and opaque UI, which has been followed by disappointing subscription numbers.

Indeed, recent reports have suggested that Apple is planning a massive relaunch of its music service just a year on from its initial release. Apparently, the ‘sweeping changes’ will include a more intuitive UI, better integration between its various components, and an expanded radio service (Apple Music’s one true success to date).

Expect a marketing blitz to accompany this relaunch, which could occur at WWDC next month.
