Apple may double iPad Air 2 RAM to 2GB

Apple is looking at doubling the amount of RAM in its next full-sized tablet, the iPad Air 2, according to a report from Taiwan.

Citing supply chain sources, TechNews is claiming that Apple will fit the iPad Air 2 out with 2GB of RAM, which would represent a dramatic increase from the iPad Air‘s 1GB.

Even more interesting is the suggestion that the iPad mini 3 will not share in this RAM doubling. The current iPad mini 2 Retina has almost identical internals to the iPad Air, but that may not prove true for the next generation.

Of course, there’s also been much kerfuffle in recent days concerning the amount of RAM in the forthcoming iPhone 6. Some have interpreted recently leaked schematics to mean that Apple’s super sized smartphone will run on the same 1GB of RAM as the iPhone 5S.

The suggestion is that a doubling of the RAM in the iPad Air 2’s case could be in preparation for a new split-screen multitasking function that’s been noted within iOS 8. It could be that Apple is planning to specialise even more with its new operating system, though you would think it would want both of its next-gen tablets on board if so.

One the iWatch front, the Taiwanese website’s supply chain sources reckon that Apple’s smartwatch will run on 512MB of RAM, and with sport 8GB of internal storage. It will also apparently be able to operate without the help of an iPhone or iPad.
