Apple has released a new entry-level model of its iPod touch range with updated components for £199.
The new 16GB iPod touch features a 4-inch Retina display, an A5 CPU, a front-facing FaceTime camera, and an ultra-thin 6.1mm body – all just like the rest of the iPod touch 5th generation class released in October of last year.
However, there are some notable omissions beyond the drop in internal storage. The new 16GB iPod touch doesn’t feature the 5-megapixel iSight camera found in the 32GB and 64GB models. It has also rather oddly shed its lanyard loop.
The result of these missing components is a more or less up to date iPod touch for £199.
When the iPod touch 5th generation was launched last year, the entry point continued to be represented by a 16GB iPod touch 4th generation unit, which still had the 3.5-inch Retina display and the A4 CPU. It cost £169.
So, you’re essentially getting a healthy spec bump, an improved design, and full compatibility with all of those post-iPhone 5 widescreen apps for a £30 premium. Not a bad deal at all, it seems.
At the time of writing the UK Apple store still has the little packaging box graphic over the new 16GB iPod touch, and it’s not yet available to buy. The US Apple store has it in all its glory, though, so you can expect it to appear very soon over here.
