Apple iTunes hits 25 billion song downloads milestone

Apple has confirmed iTunes has hit a new milestone moment with 25 billion songs downloaded through the online music outlet.

With a catalogue of more than 26 million tracks available across 119 countries, Apple has today recorded the 25 billionth iTunes song download, with Phillip Lupke from Germany credited with helping the Cupertino based company to the new milestone figure.

Having downloaded “Monkey Drums” (Goksel Vancin Remix) by Chase Buch to tip the balance on the 25 billionth download, Lupke has been awarded with a 10,000 euro iTunes gift card for his role in helping Apple hit the new marker.

“We are grateful to our users whose passion for music over the past 10 years has made iTunes the number one music retailer in the world,” Apple’s Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services said of the achievement. “Averaging over 15,000 songs downloaded per minute, the iTunes Store connects music fans with their favourite artists, including global sensations like Adele and Coldplay and new artists like The Lumineers, on a scale we never imagined possible.”

Although having helped spell the end for high street music retailers such as HMV and Virgin, a number of musicians have sung the praises of Apple and iTunes in helping forward the push into a world of digital music sales.

“In a lot of ways, iTunes has leveled the playing field for musicians. Whether you’re unsigned, indie, major, whatever—it’s the place most people go to buy digital music,” said Wesley Schultz, guitarist and lead vocalist of The Lumineers. “iTunes doesn’t exclude any musicians simply because they’re not yet established or popular.”

Arguably the world’s best known digital outlet, Apple in recent years has added to iTunes’ 26 million songs with a raft of downloadable TV, film, game and app based content.
