Apple might be eyeing huge new iPhone launch venue

The expected unveiling of Apple’s next iPhone is nearly upon us, but the company still hasn’t confirmed details for the launch event.

Fortunately, the venue for the big iPhone 6S reveal may have just been unearthed by a US news site.

A new report by Hoodline suggests Apple may be eyeing the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium for its grand unveiling.

The San Francisco-based auditorium has a maximum capacity of 7,000 guests, far higher than the venues for previous iPhone launches.

For contrast, the Yerba Buena Center and the Flint Center – both previous Apple venues – seat 1,470 and 2,400 people respectively.

But what proof is there that the BGCA will host the iPhone 6S reveal? There’s nothing concrete unfortunately – only clues.

The first hint is that the venue is “closed” for a “private event” between September 4 and September 13.

Apple is expected to unveil both the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus on September 9, which gels with that timeframe. It also leaves enough time for a moving-in and moving-out process.

The report details applications filed with the city’s Planning Department, whereby the event is described as a “trade show”. That, however, seems likely.

“Yet not only do those dates span the Labor Day holiday, which would be unusual for a trade show, but we could find no other evidence of a trade show, conference, convention, or other event planned for the venue during those dates,” reads the article.

There’s also another clue in the Planning Department documents. Apparently, the event organisers want to remove or modify windows to install 15-foot-tall filterboard logos.

The documents specifically show a wonky star shape as the logo, but that may be a ploy to throw off local journalists.

The building has also been surrounded by security since at least August 21, which suggests there’s something important being planned at the auditorium.

Of course, there’s no solid evidence that confirms Apple will actually use the event space for its mooted iPhone launch.

However, if the auditorium is to host the event, then it will be interesting to see why Apple suddenly requires a huge increase in seating capacity.

Apple still hasn’t sent out invites for the event yet. Last year’s were doled out on August 28, so we’re probably not far off the big reveal now.
