Apple iPhone 8 could say bye-bye to bezels and hello to larger displays

Next year’s iPhone 8 will have larger displays without broadening the physical footprint, according to reports on Friday.

Sources from the Asian supply chain told analysts the addition of edge-to-edge displays will boost screen real estate to 5.0- and 5.8-inches respectively.

The information is in line with previous reports from noted commentator Ming-Chi Kuo.

We believe Apple is looking to increase the screen sizes with zero bezel such that they will still fit in the same size,” the analysts from Barclays wrote (via Business Insider).

“iPhone 8 design didn’t sound 100% locked down but we believe the move is to a bezel-less design with screen sizes getting larger and curved edges in the original envelope. The IP8 moves to 5″ (from 4.7″) and the Plus moves to 5.8″ (from 5.5”).”

The current iPhone 7 devices are 4.7-inches and 5.5-inches respectively.

Furthermore, the analysts say that the rumoured OLED displays will be saved for the iPhone 8 Plus.

This would enable a curved display that would wrap around the edge of the iPhone, akin to the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge and its predecessor.

The analysts added: “By using a plastic OLED screen, the screen can bend at the edges to allow a curved bezel-less edge.”

The iPhone 8 is expected to arrive in September 2017 and will mark the first major redesign in 3 years.
