Apple sold record 13 million iPhones in opening weekend

Surprise, surprise – Apple’s new iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus sold really well.

The company has officially confirmed a record-breaking opening weekend for the launch of its new smartphones.

According to Apple, more than 13 million new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus handsets were sold within the first three days following launch.

For comparison, the opening weekend of last year’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus saw 10 million handsets sold.

Prior to that, the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C racked up a cumulative 9 million sales between them.

Sales for iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first-weekend sales results in Apple’s history,” explains Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.

Cook continues: “Customers’ feedback is incredible and they’re loving 3D Touch and Live Photos, and we can’t wait to bring iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus to customers in even more countries on October 9.”

It’s likely that the inclusion of China in the roster of launch countries helped to pad out sales. For contrast, last year the China launch was delayed.

Whatever the case, it’s clear that Apple’s new devices have been extremely popular. However, the best indication of popularity will come once Apple releases its sales figures for the whole quarter.
