Apple introduces multicultural emoji with iOS 8.3 beta

Apple has shown off its new, multicultural emoji keyboard within the latest beta versions of iOS 8 and Mac OS X Yosemite.

The new emoji, promised earlier this month, have arrived in the iOS 8.3 and Mac OS X 10.10.3 betas, which are rolling out to developers today (via The Next Web / 9to5Mac).

The revamped emoji keyboard now allows users to modify the skin tone of any human icon by tapping holding down the icon and choosing a different tone from the pop up menu. This works for faces and icons like the thumbs up, clapping, waving and praying, etc.

The revamped emoji keyboard also stretches to family diversity, with same-sex couples now featuring within the family unit characters.

Apple has also added a lot more flags, meaning more nations are represented and, naturally, the watch emoji is now represented by an Apple Watch.

Elsewhere in the iOS 8.3 beta it was revealed Siri will also boost her own cultural sensitivity with 7 new languages. The latest build previews Siri’s ability to speak Russian, Danish, Dutch, Thai, Turkish, Swedish and Portuguese.

The new versions of the software are expected to be released to users some time next month, although Apple is still to offer iOS 8.2 to the public.
