The G5s break new speed records, while Apple also decides to cut the price of its displays. How generous...?!
Apple has made its top of the line Macs go that little bit faster with the announcement of a new top of the line G5.
Armed with dual 64bit PowerPC processors running at up to 2.7GHz, Apple’s new headliner should pack a serious punch. Ably filling the space around it is DDR 400MHz memory, support for bigger hard drives, a “16X SuperDrive” with dual layer writing capability and native compatibility with Apple’s monstrous 30in Cinema HD display. As an added bonus the enticing Tiger OS will ship with all new G5s.
Given Apple’s notoriously high pricing, the company is keen to point out G5s can be bought for a little as £999 including VAT. That said, costs spiral quickly if you decide to bulk things up a little, so rather than break everything down to its smallest detail it makes more sense to show you Apple’s three “recommended” systems.
For £1,349 (incl. VAT) you get a dual 2GHz 64bit PowerPC G5 with 512MB DDR 400MHz RAM (4GB max), 160GB SATA 7,200rpm hard drive, ATI Radeon 9600 with 128MB DDR SDRAM, three PCI slots (64-bit 33MHz) and a 16X SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±R/CD-RW).
£1,699 (incl. VAT) gets you a dual 2.3 GHz 64bit PowerPC G5, also with 512MB DDR 400MHz RAM (but an 8GB max), 250GB SATA 7,200rpm HDD, the same ATI Radeon 9600 with 128MB DDR SDRAM, three PCI-X slots (one 64-bit 133 MHz, two 64-bit 100 MHz) and the 16X SuperDrive.
Top of the pile at £1,999 (incl. VAT) is the dual 2.7 GHz 64bit PowerPC G5: 512MB DDR 400MHz RAM (8GB max), 250GB SATA 7,200rpm HDD, ATI Radeon 9650 with 256MB DDR SDRAM, three PCI-X slots (one 64-bit 133 MHz, two 64-bit 100 MHz) and the 16X SuperDrive.
If you want to go really nuts, build-to-order machines can include up to 8GB RAM, two 400GB SATA HDDs and an nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL graphics card. Millionaires only need apply.
In related news, Apple has also chopped the SRPs of its Cinema displays. The 20 incher is now £549, the 23in: £1,049 and the 30in: £2,099. All prices include VAT.
30 inch models all round then?!
