Apple has sold more than 700 million iPhones

Apple has sold more than 700 million iPhones to date, the Cupertino-based company has confirmed.

With the original iPhone having launched back in 2007, Apple has now put more than 700 million of its market-leading smartphones in the hands of consumers around the world.

“Recently we sold our 700 millionth iPhone,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the company’s Apple Watch launch event.

Bigging up the iPhone’s continued sales rise, he added: “iPhone is growing stronger than ever and if you look at last quarter we sold at a rate of double the rest of the industry.

“This led the iPhone to be the top selling smartphone in the world.”

The most recent additions to the iPhone family, the iPhone 6 and oversized iPhone 6 Plus shifted a staggering 10 million units in their opening weekend on sale only.

It’s not just strong sales Apple has seen for its smartphones, either. Cook was keen to stress how pleased iPhone owners are with their devices.

“We are most proud of our consumer satisfaction score of 99 per cent,” he stated. “These numbers are unheard of.”

While offering no detailed insight into what the company’s next flagship phone – the much mooted iPhone 6S – will introduce, Cook promised the iPhone line would continue to push the boundaries of the smartphone space.

“When we announced iPhone it was a revolutionary mobile phone, it was the best iPod we had ever created and the internet in your pocket,” he said.

“The iPhone is continuing to transform even more parts of our lives.”
