Apple has revealed that it currently has no plans to launch an official dock for the iPhone 5, making the announcement just hours before the eagerly awaited handset is set to hit retailers.
With the iPhone 5 UK release date set to be held tomorrow, September 21st, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Marketing, Phil Schiller, has suggested that in a break from tradition Apple will not launch an officially branded iPhone 5 dock, despite the iOS 6 filled handset featuring an all new 8-pin Lightning port dock connector.
Responding to customer emails on the potential arrival of an Apple branded iPhone 5 dock, 9to5Mac has reported Schiller as stating: "We do not plan on making a dock for the iPhone 5. Most people who use docks use them with speaker or clock systems.” His email teasingly signed off “sent from my iPhone 5.”
The first time Apple will not release a first-party branded dock to accompany an iPhone launch, past iterations have seen the docks acts as a standalone charging station as well as allowing users to sync their handsets with their computer or connect it to a speaker system.
With the move to the new Lightning port connector, Apple is instead pinning its lucrative accessory hopes on a new 30-pin to Lightning port adaptor that will set wannabe owners back £25 apiece yet allow them to use their new iPhone 5 handsets with existing speaker docks and a whole raft of otherwise incompatible speakers.
Having already broken pre-order records with advanced orders seeing iPhone 5 sales top 2 million units in just 24 hours, the eagerly awaited iPhone 5 release date looks set to be Apple’s most successful iPhone launch to date. Officially unveiled last week, the iPhone 5 boasts an all new form factor wrapped around a bevy of software and hardware improvements.
Making the jump to a new 4-inch Retina display, up from the previous 3.5-inch standard, the iPhone 5 screen features an impressive 1136 x 640p image resolution and 326PPI image density. Further iPhone 5 specs see the handset boast a new A6 processor and a revised, 7.6mm thick form factor.
