Apple and IBM team-up to make iPhones and iPads even better for work

Apple and IBM have announced a partnership designed to make iOS devices better, more useful for business folk.

The new deal between Apple and IBM sees a pooling of resources designed to make iPhones and iPads all the more attractive to CIOs and IT managers of companies big and small.

IBM will uses its sales force to sell Apple mobile devices into business customers and will offer its MobileFirst platform for businesses while Apple will offer a discete AppleCare service for business that will offer 24 hour support.

IBM’s MobileFirst is a 100-strong suite of apps that will provide the security needed to plug into work networks, as well as analytics tools designed for businesses.

For the average person, this means your work phone is perhaps slightly more likely to be an iPhone next time.

You might see this move as strange, that Apple and IBM would appear to be natural enemies. However, Tim Cook explained in an interview with CNBC, “We've come from 30 years ago being competitors to today being incredibly complementary.”

This move is bad news for BlackBerry, whose traditional stranglehold on the enterprise market has already been eroded by iOS devices and Android over the past five years.

We’re likely to hear a little more about iPhones at work at the launch of the next Apple phone, the iPhone 6.

It is expected to land in September 2014, although the date is yet to be confirmed by Apple.

The iPhone 6 is rumoured to come in two sizes, with a 4.7-inch screen model and another with a 5.5-inch screen.

I wouldn't use the word "eroded" to describe Blackberry's current business. The more appropriate term is "destroyed". This just has Apple and IBM picking up that last nail for their coffin.

Ouch. Sad but true.

Oh yes, this collaboration is guaranteed to succeed. Apple and IBM has never collaborated before. I wonder what happened to the powerPC? Not saying that this currently announced collaboration is bound to fail as before, but we should wait and see. Then again, if you need Apple to make you feel important in life, waiting might be hard to do.

Only an Apple fanboy can presume that IBM´s competitors will not do anything and just watch Apple and IBM steal the enterprise market.

The truth is, they will look for a way how to counteract. MDM/EMM is dominated by BB these days. Therefore the aforesaid deal can actually increase value of BB in the eyes of the likes of MS and others.

Apple is late to the enterprise as well it is so late to the automotive (area dominated by BB QNX) that CarPlay is basically just a skin running on BB QNX.
