Tor is open source, and is widely acknowledged as the most secure way to access the internet anonymously. It keeps your identity hidden by encrypting all the traffic going into or out of your computer, and also hides your location and any other personal data that’s usually revealed when you log on.
It should even speed up your browsing, as pages load faster when they’re not sucking all your personal info out of your computer.
You don’t need to download or install any software, to log in with a special username and password, or register. Just plug it in and it’ll encrypt your network.
That means you can use programs over Tor that were never supported before, or were complicated to set up, such as Skype and Safari.
The anonabox is completely open source, with the hardware schematics and code freely available to anyone who wants them. The makers claim this will mean it’s free from the back doors and security flaws common to other routers.
With the device aiming to sell for $45 (£28), this is one of the most affordable – not to mention portable – Tor routers around. It’s already smashed its funding target on Kickstarter.
