Angry Birds Toons to launch this weekend via apps

Angry Birds fans will soon be able to enjoy Angry Birds Toons, bird-based cartoons streamed straight from the apps.

The Angry Birds franchise is now spreading its wings to encompass a cartoon series. Rovio announced the animated series back in February, hinting that it would launch via an unconventional broadcasting channel.

In fact, from March 17, anyone with access to one of the various Angry Birds apps will be granted access to the new Angry Birds Toons channel from directly within the app on their iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.

The series is also expect to stream via other on-demand channels from March 16, but for now, the launch of the series within the apps is a novel way to launch a cartoon.

Anyone expecting the series just to be an animated version of the bird flinging game could be sorely disappointed though, as it looks like Angry Birds Toons will follow the day-to-day antics of the various coloured birds. The short YouTube trailer for the cartoons show the three Blue birds playing the saxophone and riding skateboards, the classic Red bird relaxing on the beach, Chuck the Yellow bird out jogging and Matilda, the White egg-bombing bird, cooking for her fellow feathered chums.

Of course, it also looks like the pigs will play a large part in the upcoming series too, in their various egg-snatching disguises.

The first of 52 episodes will air this weekend, reaching the quarter of a billion active users who have already downloaded the apps.

Rovio’s CEO Mikael Hed has already recognised the series’ cartoon launch is a just part of the company’s plans for expansion.

“We’ve long wanted to tell our fans the story of the Angry Birds and the Bad Piggies, to introduce their personalities and their world in detail.” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. “We’re delighted to introduce all this through our new channel, with easy and instant access to the stories in the palm of your hand. With over 1.7 billion downloads, we can reach a far wider and more engaged global audience than traditional distribution would allow.

“Launching the channel, and partnering up with some of the best video-on-demand providers and TV networks, is an important milestone for us on our journey towards becoming a fully fledged entertainment powerhouse.”
