Bad PIggies

As we reported a couple of weeks ago, the maker of Angry Birds is planning a spin-off based on the exploits of those devious green pigs. Now fresh gameplay details for Bad Piggies have emerged.

It seems Bad Piggies will be flipping around the very concept of Angry Birds, which is apt given that you find yourself playing the game from the perspective of the very pigs you sought to destroy in Rovio's smash-hit series.

If Angry Birds (and its sequels) was all about destruction, Bad Piggies is all about creation. As reported by Yahoo! Games, the aim of the game here is to build a series of crazy contraptions to transport our piggies through each twisting course to the level exit.

You must create outlandish vehicles by dragging and dropping components in a modular fashion, the results of which will then move or even fly using the game's exaggerated physics model. Too nose-heavy? Not enough lift? Then the craft will handle accordingly.

It a bit like The A-Team but with a distinctly bacony whiff. Actually, it reminds us a little (a lot, actually) of the cruelly ignored Xbox 360 game, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts which featured a very similar premise, but in 3D.

Of course, another way to look at Bad Piggies is as a combination of Rovio's two main titles so far - Angry Birds and Amazing Alex. It has the characters and universe of the former and the creative physics of the latter, so Rovio is really maximising its resources here.

Bad Piggies should get established as a major franchise in its own right, though. "This is the sibling of Angry Birds, and it will get a lot of push over time," promises Rovio's Ville Heijari.

But will it be any good? We only have until September 27 to find out.
