The next major instalment of the Angry Birds saga has been released, Angry Birds Space. Catapulting the birds beyond the outer reaches of the atmosphere, the game uses gravity to enrich the basic gameplay of the massively popular casual game.

Rovio has released Angry Birds Space, the Super Mario Galaxy of the casual game series. It's available now across iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Androids, PCs and Macs, although at the time of writing it hadn't appeared on the UK App Store. It costs 69p on iPhone, and the iPad-optimised Angry Birds HD is £1.99. This HD edition has full support for the new iPad and its Retina display screen.

Angry Birds Space offers 60 levels in its initial download, and Rovio has already suggested that plenty more will be added in the future, as free updates. In tune with current trends, in-app purchases are also part of the game.

Rovio CEO Mikael Hed commented that, "This launch marks a huge step for us as a company, and our whole team and partners have really pulled together to bring out a fantastic array of exciting products and experiences. We hope that our fans will find all things Angry Birds Space as delightful as the Rovio family does."

To date, the series has achieved over 600 million downloads. And if it doesn't rocket straight to the App Store chart, it'll be bad news for Rovio. The current chart-topping game is Draw Something, in which players have to guess what the drawings of other players from across the world are meant to be.
