Angry Birds series tops 8m Christmas Day downloads

Following the festive period, Angry Birds developer Rovio has revealed that the iconic app franchise topped a staggering 8 million downloads on Christmas day.

Hitting a hefty 30 million downloads between December 22 and December 29, Rovio has revealed that the current collection of Angry Birds apps, including the recently released Angry Birds Star Wars and original Angry Birds offering, found their way to 17.4 million new Android and iOS devices on Christmas day alone, a figure that represents one in every two new devices registered.

“We had 30 million downloads during Christmas week (December 22-29) and, on Christmas Day, over 8 million downloads in 24 hours alone!” a Rovio spokesperson announced via the company’s official blog.

Far from a one hit wonder, Rovio has followed up the original Angry Birds launch with a raft of spin-offs and new releases that have helped extended the lifespan and enjoyment factor of the avian flinging app sensation. Adding to the likes of movie tie-in Angry Birds Rio and the frequently updated Angry Birds Seasons, recent months have seen the introduction of Angry Birds Space and Angry Birds Star Wars.

What’s more, offering avid smartphone and tablet based gamers a look at the darker side of the Angry Birds universe, Rovio in 2012 launched the first title focussing on the Birds’ rivals in Bad Piggies.

“Wow, what a year!” the Rovio blog post added. “We released four critically-acclaimed bestselling mobile games, developed two top-rated Facebook games, and reached more than a billion downloads — all before our 3rd “Birdday”!

“Angry Birds Star Wars and Bad Piggies in particular have dominated the app charts, with Angry Birds Star Wars holding the #1 position on the US iPhone chart ever since its release!”

Suggesting that the Angry Birds series will continue to grow, the Rovio spokesperson teased: “It’s been an amazing year and we can’t thank our fans enough for their fantastic support. Stay tuned in 2013 for even more incredible surprises!”
