Developer Rovio has revealed that the Angry Birds movie release date will be held in ‘summer 2016’, as the company confirms John Cohen as the flick’s producer.
Three years to the day that the original Angry Birds game was released, Rovio has revealed that Cohen, producer on Despicable Me, will produce the upcoming Angry Birds movie whilst David Maisel, former Chairman of Marvel Studios, will be the title’s executive producer.
“John’s an exceptionally talented producer, and we’re delighted to have him join the flock,” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertainment. “With John’s hands-on producer background and David´s expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system. Both professionals have the ideal skills and vision to achieve incredible things.”
Retaining full creative control over the Angry Birds movie, Rovio has opted to forgo a traditional partnership with a major Hollywood studio, instead opting to produce and finance the film independently. The company’s first foray into the feature film market, Rovio has confirmed that the Angry Birds movie release date will see the picture “coming to theatres in summer 2016.”
“I’m so excited and honored to be working on this film with Mikael, David, and Rovio’s incredibly talented game developers and artists,” said John Cohen. “From both an entertainment and strategic perspective, Rovio is at the forefront of game innovation and is trailblazing terrific new ways for Angry Birds fans to interact with these characters. I’ve personally spent countless hours playing the Angry Birds games over the last few years, which I can now happily justify as research for the movie.”
Having debuted on December 11 2009, Angry Birds games have since notched up more than 1 billion total downloads with the original Angry Birds release having been backed up by the ever changing Angry Birds Seasons, the movie tie-in Angry Birds Rio and physics based Angry Birds Space.
Earlier this year, Rovio paired up with one of history’s largest movie franchises with Angry Birds Star Wars launch to much fanfare. An instant hit, Angry Birds Star Wars has already recorded millions of downloads, topping the Apple App Store charts less than three hours from launch.
