Android TV gets HBO Now, Showtime and WWE

Google has announced a new array of premium video apps for users of its Android TV set-top boxes and televisions.

In a blog post, the company confirmed top standalone US streaming services HBO Now and Showtime are now available for download.

As well is integrating top content like Game of Thrones and Homeland, the platform is also getting apps from WWE, UFC and CBS.

Disney Movies Anywhere is now part of the line-up, as is the EPIX platform, bringing the total number of premium TV apps above 50, with more than 600 compatible apps in total.

The update comes in a big week for Google’s television products, following the launch of the revamped Chromecast 2.0 hardware and app.

In many ways, the new Chromecast range, which now enables games to be streamed to the television and offers a one-stop ‘What’s On’ section with universal search, negates the merits of Android TV somewhat.

Chromecast, at $35/£30 seems like a much better, and far more affordable option than anything offered within the Android TV range of devices.

Regardless, the Android TV operating system is available on a host of set-top boxes, smart TVs and Google’s own Nexus Player.
