Android Nougat only just launched – and already Android 7.1 is here

Nougat

Google’s Android 7.0 Nougat operating system is only just starting its roll-out to recent Nexus devices, but the next iteration already appears to be on the way.

Reports on Wednesday have offered credence to speculation the forthcoming HTC Nexus devices, codenamed Marlin and Sailfish and expected this autumn, might actually ship with Android 7.1.

Initially spotted by an Android developer on Reddit (via PhoneArena), the crash and report section of Google’s developer console now features a reference to Android 7.1 (below).

The developer also posted screenshots from the console showing his app had been installed 115 times by phones running Android 7.1.

As a result, Android fans are now speculating the next Nexus devices will break precedent and arrive with a newer version than the base .0 release

Android 7.1

Weight is added to this assumption via Google’s vow to release the Nougat Maintenance Release 1 to developers this autumn. Could this be the Android 7.1 release?

Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for the first non-Nexus handset to pack Nougat. LG V20 looks set to lead the way with a launch coming on September 6.

However, the HTC One A9 may steal its thunder, with HTC promising swift updates within 15 days of any new Android version release.

Got it on my 6p today. I use Nova launcher though so I can barely tell the difference until I hit the menus. Battery life is the key for me though, as good as it is on the Nexus 6p it won't hurt being better especially if that translates to other phones too. Wasn't keen on the large icons when I had a brief look at the Google launcher I have to say. Easily changed though, unlike on an iPhone where every phone looks pretty much the same. For those that scream android fan boy.... I'm typing this on my ipad.
