Android 5.1.1 comes to Moto 360

Google has announced the rollout of Android Wear 5.1.1 to the Moto 360 smartwatch.

The latest version of Android is now available on arguably the most popular Android Wear watch, the Motorola Moto 360.

Google announced the news, as it often does with such minor announcements, via a Google+ post. According to the Android Wear Developers post from Wayne Piekarski, “OTA rollouts are always done over a period of many days, so it will take some time to receive your update.”

The latest version of Android brings a number of key improvements to Android Wear watches. This includes support for always-on apps, so that an app can display dynamic data on the device, even when the app is in ambient mode.

This feature will be particularly useful to fitness app users who want to monitor their exercise data.

Another major new feature with this version of Android Wear is Wi-Fi support. While some Android Wear watches (such as the Moto 360) came with hardware support for direct Wi-Fi connectivity, it’s only now been enabled in the Android Wear software.

Wi-Fi support makes your watch less reliant on its Bluetooth connection to your smartphone, so it can connect to it over the internet.

These and more minor improvements should be making their way to Moto 360 watches as we speak.
