The musketeers are coming.
AMD’s tri-core Phenom launch schedule is starting to appear rather like the last part of a Hokey Cokey, swinging about as it does: left, right and centre. If insiders are to be believed though, we may finally be getting closer to knowing the actual time-scales by which AMD is working. Although given the nature of these leaks, I’m advising a large pinch of salt be administered before you read any further.
So, on to the gory details, or the at least the details: apparently two of the 8000-series of Phenoms will be making their débuts next month, the 2.3GHz Phenom 8600 and 2.1GHz Phenom 8400 will be available probably some time after CeBIT where the chips are expected to be shown off. Presumably, though, these chips share the same errata as their quad-core brethren as come May-ish they are to be joined by the 2.4GHz 8750 and 2.3GHz 8650 – the ‘50′ differentiating between manufacturing steppings.
The 2.4GHz tri-core Phenom 8700 is expected to be available come Q2 as well, although by that time any budding purchasers will almost certainly want to go for the newer revision, ’50’-edition, chips to ensure they get the full performance expected. On the subject of Phenoms in general, HKEPC expects that both the 2.6GHz Phenom 9900 and 2.4GHz 9700 have been scrapped and will be delayed to re-emerge as the 9950 and 9750 respectively while also being joined by the 2.3GHz 9650 and 2.2GHz 9550.
Whether the rumour will turn out to be accurate we can’t predict, but HKEPC’s sources have pulled through in the past as fairly accurate so I have reasonable hopes that these rumours could be active. As I’ve said before and will doubtless say again, I do think that if the pricing is right, AMD could really have a potential winner on its hands with tri-core Phenom so roll on March and the purported launch.
