AMD drops massive hint over Playstation Neo and updated Xbox One

Another day, another potential indication a PlayStation Neo / 4.5 and an Xbox One update might well be on the way this year.

The latest hint comes from chip manufacturer AMD, which says it has revealed sizeable orders for three new custom SoC configurations, all of which are within the gaming sector.

At its most recent earnings call (via SlashGear), the firm said it expects revenues to rise 15 per cent in the next quarter due to the orders.

The additional custom will also bring in $1.5 billion in revenues over the next 3/4 years, so this is clearly a big deal.

Nintendo are long-time AMD customers and the current PS4 and Xbox One also feature AMD internals.

With the Nintendo NX expected to go into production this year, more and more weight to the PS4.5 rumours and the potential for Microsoft to follow suit, does this account for the three orders in question?

Despite dropping a rather large hint, AMD says it isn’t giving anything else away and it’ll be left up to the manufacturers to break the news.

The PlayStation and Nintendo announcements are expected to arrive at E3 2016, but whether Microsoft has anything up its sleeve to compete remains unclear.

The company recently stated it wouldn’t launch an Xbox One.5, but mid-cycle hardware refreshes were common with the Xbox 360, which was finally discontinued this week.

"The company recently stated it wouldn’t launch an Xbox One.5"

What was actually said by Phil Spencer was "he didn't believe in a .5 model" But he also said "if they are going to release something new it will be a upgrade" (as in not just a few new extras)so you can guarantee MS have something especially as it was Phil Spencer who mentioned upgrades BEFORE any Sony 4.5 rumours appeared.

The Sony 4.5 is clearly the Sony PS5 if the graphic,Cpu etc upgrades are true, they are trying to damage control the fact that they are releasing it so soon after the PS4 and know that there are going to be a lot of annoyed people out there who will have to spend out for another console all over again or be left behind.

They won't be left behind. The old version will play the same games.

No matter how Sony try and spin it if they release a new model they will drop support to the PS4 down to a trickle sooner rather than later, they aren't exactly releasing much for it now instead preferring to put most of their finances in a novelty add on wired VR headset.

Sony will punish the Playstation owners that dont upgrade by lagging your online multiplayer games by using hardware throttles and console heat/ fan issues to quicken the death of your console....Prolly an "update" will change your fan settings to encourage overheating...

Yes. That sounds highly likely.

Yes, a new generation. Only one where all your existing games work perfectly and the controllers and all other accessories are the same. And where all next-generation games must be functionally equivalent to the current gen ones, and run on the existing consoles.

No publisher is going to exclude the existing 40 million users, even if they were allowed to. If you really want the Neo, just trade in your PS4 at Game and take the £100 or whatever hit. Or don't, if the benefit isn't worth it.

All Neo games must run on the PS4 (with slightly reduced graphics settings), so both models will have identical support.

After years of similar games that just increase the resolution / textures / effects, many developers are excited about VR. It offers the first opportunity for fundamentally different new game types since the 2D-3D transition of the PS1 generation.

As if that has happened with ANY console in history... but sure... "highly likely".

Sorry, assumed the sarcasm was obvious.

All Neo games must run on the PS4 For how long ? Is it 6 month's, a year ? There is now way they will be setting the rules with the dev's maybe with the Indies they are but the big devs will not have any of that.

VR could be okay but at the end of the day it's a very expensive "Addon" novelty and like Kinect 1 it will split the user base and if it sells well Sony will be in exactly the same position as MS were having to try to develop for both the core gamers and the add on users, even MS found the cost of doing both to much.

I'm not even going to go into the amount of wires that you get lumbered with the VR headset, the need for the camera and the Move controllers, the amount of space needed in a room to safely play some of the games, looking a bit stupid waving your arms around with two lightbulbs in your hands whilst wearing a cut down looking welders mask.
