AMD announces Radeon R9 Fury, R9 300 and R7 300 series graphics cards
AMD has announced its new line of graphics cards, the Radeon R9 and R7 300 series, including four that utilise the highly anticipated Fiji GPU core with HBM.
Unveiled at the company’s A New Era of PC Gaming event at E3, the cards all include support for DirectX 12 and FreeSync, and are based on AMD’s Graphics Core Next architecture, but it’s the new Fiji-based cards that are most exciting.
These all fall into the R9 series, with the range topping model being the R9 Fury X followed by the R9 Fury and R9 Nano, with the 390X, 390 and 380 filling in the rest of the R9 range.
The Fury X will be AMD’s flagship card, capable of delivering 8.6TFLOPs from its 4,096 stream processors – 1.5x as many as on the 290X. AMD is also claiming a 1.5x improvement in performance per watt, which should help to keep the card from consuming too much power – a key problem with the 290X.
Also helping is the presence of a new technology called frame rate target control, which puts the card into a lower power state in between frames when it is running faster than the refresh rate of your monitor.
Also key to the new Fiji design is High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), which sees memory dies stacked on top of each other for improvements in performance and efficiency.
The card will use a liquid cooler and sports an all new design, with red illuminate logo and a soft-touch black finish.
Next up is the regular Fury card, which will be a slightly cut-down version of the Fury X that uses a more conventional air-cooler. Other specs are yet to be confirmed.
An intriguing addition is the R9 Nano, which is a small for factor card, just six inches long. AMD claims performance akin to a 290X but in a much smaller, more energy efficient package.
Details of the rest of the range, including the R7 370 and R7 360, are sparse with full details arriving in two days time for the official launch.
What we do know are the prices, though. The Fury X is set to cost $649, putting it in direct rivalry with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 ti, while the full range of prices for the rest of the series can be seen below.
