After arguably doing its bit to put many brick and mortar stores out of business, with its low prices and speedy delivery, Amazon is reportedly about to open its first physical store.

The Wall Street Journal claims the online behemoth will set up shop on Manhattan’s famous 34th Street shopping district in time for Christmas

The Amazon store will stock limited inventory, according to the report, and will be used as a ‘mini warehouse’ for same-day delivery, pick ups of online orders, product returns and exchanges.

It could also be used as a showroom allowing Amazon to showcase its ever-growing stable of hardware devices.

The company now has multiple Kindle Fire tablets, Kindle e-readers, a Fire Phone smartphone and the Fire TV set-top box. A showroom would allow consumers to go hands on with the devices before buying.

The New York location, which is across the street from the Empire State Building and occupies some prime real estate in the city, could be used as a test pad.

If the endeavour proves successful, the firm could choose to open locations across the United States.

The idea of same day pick-ups for items purchased from Amazon.com would certainly be attractive for some users, even if it would mean sleepless nights for brick and mortar retailers.
