Amazon reportedly in talks to produce VR content

Amazon is said to be in discussions with various parties to produce original VR content.

Netflix may have dismissed the idea of producing original virtual reality content, but Amazon has other ideas.

According to a recent report from The Wrap, Amazon is in the early stages of talks with multiple VR companies.

Just to drive home that this isn’t some outlandish immersive shopping or even gaming experience we’re talking about here, the report mentions that Amazon Studios is leading the meetings. That’s the division behind Amazon Video’s original programming.

News of Amazon’s VR talks shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s been following the company. Back in early March, a job listing revealed that the company was scouting for staff experienced in VR software to work on a “Virtual Reality experience within Amazon Video.”

Prior to that, a patent application revealed that Amazon had designed its own VR headset.

Rival Netflix recently said that it wasn’t working on original VR content, although it previously told TrustedReviews that it was “very interested” in where the format could go in terms of storytelling. Netflix has also released a VR Netflix app for the Samsung Gear VR headset, though this simply pumped Netflix content into a virtual living room.

Amazon could steal a march on its main streaming rival here, although VR is far from an accepted mainstream medium right now – particularly when it comes to traditional TV and movie media.
