Amazon opens its first physical bookshop today

by

Amazon Bookshop

Famed online retailer and ebook specialist Amazon is about to get physical with its first ever bookshop.

Amazon will open Amazon Books in Seattle later today, at 09:30 PST. And yes, that means it will be selling proper physical books, made of paper.

Of course, it wouldn't be Amazon without some huge sophisticated algorithms running things. Sure enough, Amazon will utilise its website data to determine which books it sells, as well as a little curation.

Naturally, Amazon Books will also be used to sell Amazon's range of Kindle ebook readers, as well as its other hardware. That means you'll also be able to walk in and try out Amazon's Fire Tablets, the Echo smart speaker, and the Fire TV.

While initial photos from the Amazon website appear to show a fairly typically designed bookshop, Amazon is doing some things differently. For example, it's displaying its books face-out rather than stacking them in spines-out.

It's also giving each of its books a little placard with an Amazon rating and one of its customer reviews.

Another appealing thing about Amazon Books is that the book prices in-store will match the company's online pricing. In other words, it'll be a lot cheaper than other bookshops.

Amazon looks like it means business with its first bookshop, so it could well be the first of many.
