Amazon has launched a new miniature tablet aimed specifically at children.

The Amazon Fire HD Kids Edition is available for pre-order now, starting at a very affordable £119. It will start shipping later this month, from 18 June.

It’s a 6-inch tablet weighing just 360g, with a 1,280 x 800 IPS display, a 2-megapixel rear camera and a VGA selfie snapper. It also features an as-yet-unspecified quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0.

This all stacks up to a fairly basic handset, but Amazon’s included a generous handful of enticing extras, which positions the Fire HD Kids Edition in direct competition with Tesco's family-friendly Hudl 2.

Arguably the most attractive of these is the two-year ‘worry free’ guarantee, meaning that Amazon will either refund you or replace or repair your Fire HD Kids Edition for free if it gets damaged. The ‘kid-proof’ case that comes included should take the brunt of any tantrums, but you can never be too sure.

Users will also get a year’s free access to Amazon's new 'Fire for Kids Unlimited' service, giving them access to thousands of books, TV shows, apps and games.

If you’re concerned that the apples of your eye might get hooked on the digital stuff, you can also set usage limits, as well as a block for any kind of payments that don’t have your express permission.
