Amazon has started selling its latest ebook reader, the Kindle Voyage.
The online retail giant announced that the Amazon Kindle Voyage had commenced shipping in the US yesterday evening (that’s yesterday morning in the States, of course).
Undoubtedly the most notable feature of the Kindle Voyage is its 6-inch high-resolution display. At 300 pixels per inch (ppi), the screen is considerably sharper than the 212ppi Kindle Paperwhite‘s. You can add to that the fact that it’s 39 percent brighter than any previous Kindle display, and also sports the highest contrast.
Don’t worry, though, night-time readers. There’s a smart new system that detects the ambient lighting and slowly adjusts the brightness to a comfortable level in accordance with the rate at which your eyes adjust.
Despite this impressive spec, the Amazon Kindle Voyage is the slimmest and lightest Kindle ever. We’re talking just 7.6mm thick and 181 grams.
To facilitate this super-slim design, Amazon has made the display sit flush to the Voyage’s bezels. This may sound like an invitation to scratch, but a move to strengthened glass should prove resistant to such damage.
Glass usually equals glare, as anyone who’s tried to read a normal tablet outside in the sunshine will tell you. Amazon, however, has added another clever feature to account for that – a micro-etching process that diffuses incoming light (and gives the display a rougher, papery feel, apparently).
Oh, and those physical buttons that used to sit to the sides of the Kindle display? Those have gone, in favour of a sensor systems that detects when you gently squeeze the bezel in order to flip those virtual pages.
Add in double the RAM (4GB) and you’ll see that the Amazon Kindle Voyage is quite the e-reader upgrade over the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite.
The Voyage is listed as shipping from November 4 here in the UK, with prices starting at £169 for the Wi-Fi model. If you want to add a 3G connection to the package, that’ll cost you £229.
