Amazon has revealed UK launch details for its new Kindle device, the Kindle Paperwhite. The new ereader will launch on October 25, with prices starting from £109 for the Wi-Fi model.

The Kindle Paperwhite was revealed in the US back in September, and launched there on October 1. Its big innovation is the titular Paperwhite display, which features a front-lit display. This gives the display a soft glow that’s far easier on the eye over long periods than the backlit displays found on modern tablets.

It also makes the Kindle Paperwhite the first Kindle reader you can use in the dark.

The new display also sports a much higher resolution than previous Kindles - by as much as 62 per cent, according to Amazon - while contrast has also received a 25 per cent boost. It’s generally very easy on the eye, then.

Amazon has also integrated a handy new ‘Time to Read’ function that estimates how long it will take you to finish the chapter you’re on based on your reading speed. If you’ve ever tried to soldier on, eyes drooping, before switching off the lights you’ll know what a handy feature this is.

Amazon has revealed that Kindle Paperwhite prices will start from £109 for the Wi-Fi-only base model here in the UK. Meanwhile the Wi-Fi and 3G model will cost you £169. They can be pre-ordered now over on Amazon.

Meanwhile, if you were wondering how Amazon sells its Kindle devices - including the sub-£200 Kindle Fire HD tablet that will also launch on October 25 - for so cheap, we now know.

Amazon chief Jeff Bazos has told the BBC that his company sells its devices at cost price. The company makes its money on the additional stuff you buy from Amazon through its devices. Clever.
